Pierre Celis left the De Kluis brewery in Belgium around the time it became financially involved with Artois. He moved to Austin TX, where he founded the Celis Brewery and continued to brew his familiar Belgian styles. He has since returned to Belgium, leaving Celis in the capable hands of his daughter and son-in-law, Christine Celis and Peter Camps. They tripled their capacity in 1996, thanks to their partnership with American Specialty and Craft Beer Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Miller Brewing Company.
And just as we all expected they would, in April 2000, Miller acquired 100% ownership in Celis, and in December announced that the brewery would be closed, and the equipment and trademark put up for sale, at the end of the year.
But wait! There's more...the Celis brewing equipment was purchased by Michigan Brewing in 2002, and they have revived the Celis brands.
