This is the famous Hopland brewery, the first brewpub in California, and the second of nine stops on my 1992 Beer Odyssey. Don't miss it. They spent $12 million on a new brewery just up the road in Ukiah CA that will eventually have a 200,000 bbl annual capacity.

Directions: Easy. Highway 101 into Hopland, two hours or so north of San Francisco. The Mendocino Brewing Company is on the east side of the road. Anderson Valley and North Coast will be your next stops.

  Black opaque. Reasonable head. Some black malt aroma, some background hops. Very nearly smooth, except for a black malt bite. Needs more black, but body is OK.

  Good black thick roasty. A little sweeter than I like, but good enough for serious quaffing! 9th Anniversary today.

Overall Impression
Golden, moderate carbonation, good head. Fresh hop aroma, a little metallic. Good body, lots of carbonation. Slightly sticky bitterness follows the blast of hop flavor up front.

Overall Impression
Pale, shade darker than Peregrine (15-1175). Good head, low carbonation. Hop aroma slightly more pronounced than Peregrine. Bitter. OK, but bitterness lingers way too long.

Just a little darker than Peregrine, and a little hazy. Fruity nose. Smooth for a second, then a bitter BLAST! Fades pretty quick. All pale malt, Clusters for bittering and Cascades for finishing.

Amber hazy, low carbonation, OK head. Caramelly aroma, hops in the background. Huge body, lots of big malt flavor. Hops late, some alcohol, but overall it's a big malty beer.
